What Are Chinch Bugs?
Blissus insularis — the southern chinch bug — is a tiny insect, roughly 1/6 of an inch long. Adults are black with white wings folded flat across their back. Nymphs are even smaller and range from red to orange before maturing. The damage they cause is disproportionate to their size: chinch bugs pierce the grass blade, extract plant sap, and simultaneously inject a toxin that blocks the plant's water uptake. The grass dies at the crown, and no amount of watering will revive it once that tissue is gone.
In Jacksonville, chinch bugs are active nearly year-round but peak between June and September — exactly when lawns are already stressed by drought and heat. Stressed turf is their preferred target, which is why the problem compounds quickly if you miss the early signs.
How to Identify Chinch Bug Damage
The three hallmarks of chinch bug damage in Jacksonville lawns:
- Irregular, expanding patches — The damage starts as small yellow areas, usually in the sunniest parts of the yard, and grows outward in an irregular pattern over days to weeks.
- Shade stays green — This is the tell. Chinch bugs avoid shaded areas. If the damage is uniformly spread across sun and shade alike, you're more likely looking at drought stress or a fungal issue.
- Watering doesn't help — Drought stress responds to water within 24–48 hours. Chinch bug damage does not. If you've watered consistently and the patches keep spreading, assume chinch until proven otherwise.
The Float Test — Confirm It Before You Treat
Before buying insecticides, confirm you're actually dealing with chinch bugs. The float test is the standard DIY diagnostic:
- Cut the top and bottom off a large metal coffee can (or use a piece of 4-inch PVC pipe).
- Press it about 3 inches into the soil at the edge of the damaged area — where brown meets green.
- Fill the can with water and keep it full for five minutes.
- Watch the surface. Chinch bugs float. If you have an infestation, you'll see tiny black-and-white adults and reddish nymphs rising to the surface.
If the float test comes back negative in one spot, try a second location along the damage perimeter. A negative result in a healthy patch tells you nothing.

A second application 10–14 days later is often necessary to catch newly hatched nymphs.
Resistance warning: In some parts of Florida, chinch bug populations have developed resistance to pyrethroids from repeated use. If a labeled application doesn't produce results within two weeks, rotate to a product with a different mode of action — neonicotinoids or organophosphates — or call a licensed pest control operator.
Prevention — Keep Chinch Bugs from Coming Back
Once you've eliminated an infestation, the goal is to make your lawn a less inviting environment:
- Manage nitrogen fertilizer carefully. Heavy nitrogen applications produce the dense, lush growth chinch bugs prefer. In Jacksonville, limit fertilizer applications to the label rate and avoid high-nitrogen applications during peak summer heat.
- Keep thatch under half an inch. Thatch — the layer of dead organic material between the grass and the soil — provides ideal shelter for chinch bugs. Dethatch if needed, typically in late spring before the heat sets in.
- Water consistently during dry stretches. Drought-stressed grass is more susceptible. During dry periods in July and August, water 2–3 times per week in the early morning to keep the root zone hydrated without creating standing moisture.

When to Stop Treating and Start Over
Treatment is worth the investment when the live grass still outnumbers the dead zones.
